We Love Our Guests Who Share
Several months ago I heard from a loyal reader of this blog, Jean Perreault, that she had something to share with us. It took awhile to mesh my schedule with her daughter's schedule, since her daughter is her transportation provider, but we finally met last week.
Jean had a box of slides from her wedding here in the Hawthorne Hotel some 50 years ago. And what slides they are! They were taken by a special method, and are viewed in a special viewer, which causes them to have a 3-D appearance. Such fun! You can see her daughter using the viewer in the photos above.
Jean left us with about nine slides that she said we could take to have reproduced so we could add them to our historic archives. This past weekend I took them to Ritz Camera, and that is where the not-so-good news was revealed. Unfortunately they would not do the work for us, because of two issues -- one, and likely the most difficult obstacle to overcome, is that they are still protected by copyright laws and cannot be reproduced without the permission of the photographer. This law protects such items for a total of 56 years.
The other is that in taking them apart to copy them the frames in which they are housed, which allows them to be viewable in the special viewer, will be destroyed.
So, we will embark on "the next steps" to see if these two issues can be overcome, but in the meantime I wanted to tell you about Jean, and how nice it is that she has offered to share this bit of Hawthorne Hotel history with us.
Stay tuned!
Juli
