More Information on Slow Art Day

Slow Art Day is an event that occurs at museums around the world on the same day, April 16. The day is very simple - people are invited to come to the museum, look at a few pieces art on their own (viewing each piece for several minutes), and then meet as a group to discuss what was seen.

People can view anything they like, but each year we will offer a theme and some recommended art works that are great for longer viewing. This year's theme will be "Encounters: Art about meetings, exchanges, connections and collisions." A few of the works we'll be looking at include Sandison/Figurehead; Ishi, the Last Wild Indian; Jan Ken Po in the Japanese Gallery (a sculpture resembling a kimono); a fireboard in ADA depicting the pilgrims landing at Plymouth; and selected objects from Eye Spy and Chinese Export Art.

To register for the event (recommended) we ask people to RSVP at this website:

The project is coordinated by an international group of people who love art, and anyone can participate or volunteer to lead a Slow Art Day at any museum. It's structured virally so it doesn't depend on the museums to "officially" coordinate.

Last year was PEM's first year trying Slow Art Day. We had about 12 people participate, and it was a great success - really good conversation, and people enjoyed meeting each other and remarked on how amazing the experience of spending time with a work of art was.

I do hope you will consider participating in this really terrific event.  Just think, right here in Salem you will be able to participate in a world-wide event.
