Today I was so pleased and happy to open an email from Nelson Dionne, who is a collector of local historical postcards, photos, and other items, to find these two photos of the beginnings of the Hawthorne Hotel. They were both taken, according to the writing on them, in September, 1924. I love getting things like this to add to our collection of historic information.
(This photo above shows the Crowninshield-Bentley House in the left background, and the building across the street is currently where Essex Cleaners is located. The Crowninshield-Bentley House was donated to the Peabody Essex Museum, by the hotel, when the hotel expanded its parking lot and added on to the back of the hotel to add more dining space -- a room we now call Sophia's.)
(This photo above shows the Andrew Safford House in the background. That historic home, also owned by PEM, is located across the street from the main entrance of the Hawthorne Hotel, and you can see the carriage house next to it on the right.)
I hope you enjoy seeing these as much as we enjoyed received them.
Special thanks to Nelson Dionne!
Juli, and the Team of the Hawthorne Hotel
