PEM Events for May and June

We are so very lucky to have the Peabody Essex Museum here in Salem.  There is such a wealth of both exhibits and special programming, that there is always something to do and see there.  The following is their list of upcoming activities:

Huis ten Bosch, A 17th-Century Dutch Palace

Huis ten Bosch Palace, the current home of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, was built in the 1640s as a summer residence for the Dutch Stadtholder. Join distinguished scholars for an in-depth exploration of the palace, its gardens and the Oranjezaal, a grand hall filled with paintings by leading Dutch and Flemish artists.

Celebrating Surrealism Festival: Man Ray
Lee Miller, Partners in Surrealism

Opening day films, art and personal accounts enliven the discussion of Surrealism and two artists who forever shaped the discipline: Man Ray and Lee Miller. PEM Photography Curator Phillip Prodger introduces the Man Ray films. Reservations for films and presentations by June 10. Note: Films are for adults. Viewer discretion advised: nudity.

Short Films: Man Ray’s Le Retour à la Raison (Return to Reason) and Emak-Baki

For Le Retour à la Raison, Man Ray placed objects over film inside a darkroom, and then turned on the lights to print their shadows. There is no audio track. 1923, 3 minutes. Viewer discretion advised: nudity. Emak-Bakiais a series of unrelated images, revolving and often distorted. 1926, 16 minutes.

Film: Man Ray — Prophet of the Avant-Garde

Follow Man Ray from New York to his achievements in Paris and finally, to the impact his work left for future generations in a variety of fields. Recovered archival materials include candid film footage shot by Man Ray, a never-before-seen video interview and drawings from his student days that have not been seen since 1908. 1999, 60 minutes.

Presentation: Introducing Surrealism

Surrealism is one of modern art’s most exciting, baffling and riveting isms. Lynda Hartigan, The James B. and Mary Lou Hawkes Chief Curator of PEM, and Phillip Prodger, PEM photography curator, unravel the fascinating world of images and ideas that Surrealist artists explored in paintings, sculptures, collages and photographs. A Q&A follows.

Studio Saturday: Automatic Drawing

Draw without lifting pen from paper and without looking at the shapes being formed. Then, look for the “hidden” shapes and figures to create a work visible only to your eyes and mind.

Presentation: The Legendary Lee Miller, with Antony Penrose

Explore the life of Lee Miller, told with reference to those with whom she exchanged creative inspiration — artists and photographers Man Ray, Roland Penrose, Pablo Picasso and David E. Scherman, and her father, Theodore Miller, and son, Antony Penrose. Antony Penrose’s presentation has been acclaimed for its ability to embrace different levels of the history of art and photography, social commentary and emotional connection with the subject — his mother. A Q&A follows.

Film: Lee Miller — Through the Mirror

Lee Miller’s son, Antony Penrose introduces the film.Lee Miller, a photographer, Vogue model and muse to artist Man Ray, lived a full life. Inspired by the artists’ community in Montparnasse, France, in the 1930s, she made a name for herself as a post-Surrealist photographer and a war correspondent. 2006, 55 minutes. Directed by Sylvain Roumette.

Experience PEM and its special exhibitions in a new way… after hours. Bring friends and join us for a summer garden party, once each month in June, July and August. Enter though Asian Garden on Essex Street.

The first Art After Hours event, Soundscapes, is offered in conjunction with FreePort[No. 003]: Susan Philipsz. Sound artists James Forrest, Scott Buchanan and Noel Snow create unexpected atmospheres using voice, acoustic and electric instruments, recorded music and digitally created sound. Modern dancer Sarah Slifer and her ensemble offer an immersive dance performance in East India Marine Hall. Also, make your own sound art, listen to tracks from the DIY recording projects The RPM Challenge and hear what’s new from Dorkbot Boston, a group inspired by the creative blending of art, science and electricity.
