Planning Your Summer Visits to PEM?

Here is the list of activities that are planned at the Peabody Essex Museum for this Summer.  Now you have no excuse for missing anything here at the fabulous PEM.


JULY
Saturday, July 9 | 9 am – 3:30 pm | Members $55, nonmembers $65 (includes boxed lunch)
Adult Photography Workshop: Body and Architecture As Storytellers: Self-Portraiture
San Francisco–based artist Airyka Rockefeller begins with an introduction to contemporary, multicultural self-portraits to provide inspiration for making your own images during the second half of the class. The workshop includes a visit to Ropes Mansion to stage your shots, a tour of Swiss artist Marianne Mueller’s FreePort [No. 002] exhibition and a critique of the group’s photographs. Note: Participants must bring a camera and tripod, have a working knowledge of their equipment and be comfortable using self-timer settings. Space is limited, reservations by July 1.

Family Movie: A Bug’s Life | Reservations by July 11 | See August 23 for another movie.
Create your own bug mask to wear as you watch Flik, a misfit ant, try to save his colony from a greedy gang of grasshoppers. Rated G, 96 minutes.


Sunday, July 17 | 2 – 3 pm | Children ages 5 to 8 with adult | Meet at information desk
Story Trails: Dynamo H2O | Reservations by July 15 | See August 21 for another Story Trails.
Trace the path of water, from mist hovering over ponds to storms growling around mountains as we read Water Dance, by Thomas Locker. Create your own rain gauge.

NEW! Summer Party Series Art After Hours: Surrealism | No reservations required | Cash Bar
Visit Man Ray | Lee Miller, Partners in Surrealism and explore the hidden realms of the imagination through photography, Surrealist games (interactive human chess) and randomized art. Music by Walter Sickert & The Army of Broken Toys (a “wildly unusual Dada-esque circus carnival run amok”) and a demonstration by a chef from the Blue Ox restaurant in Lynn, Mass. Signature drinks. Concert: Music at Eden’s Edge 30th Anniversary Gala Performance |Reservations by July 20
Journey, A Seagoing Narrative with Music evokes the era of tall ships, and Listening to the Sea Winds celebrates the poetry of Vincent Ferrini, the late Poet of Gloucester. Black tie optional.


Saturday, July 23 | 1 – 3 pm | All ages | Art Studios
Studio Saturday: Porcelain Plates | See August 27 for another Studio Saturday.
Explore Asian export porcelain and create your own plate design. Made possible by American Dental Partners.

Weekend Festival: Inspired by Land
Rustic-furniture-making demonstrations, musicians, art activities, outdoor painting workshops and more re-create the mood when artists embraced the natural world on view in Painting the American Vision.

Demonstration: Rustic Furniture Making
Master furniture artisan Barry Gregson, of the Adirondack Rustics Gallery, demonstrates the techniques and tools used to make stools, benches, rocking chairs and more.
10:30 – 11 am | Families with children ages 4 and up
Story Time: Henry Works | Tickets available at admissions desk on day of program
 Follow Henry the bear, modeled after Henry David Thoreau, as he steps outside and decides that it is “the perfect day to walk to work.” Henry, in D.B. Johnson’s Henry Works, makes his way through the landscape until his most important work is revealed!

Concerts: The Course of Empire
Nell Shaw Cohen presents an original piece for string quartet she composed in response to the themes represented in Thomas Cole’s five paintings The Course of Empire.

Workshops: Watercolor Sketching
Join artist Bill Mitchell and learn how to sketch with watercolors.

Drop-in Art Activity: Family Painting En Plein Air
Drawing inspiration from nature, drop in to experience watercolor painting in the open air.

Tours: Art and Nature with Henry David Thoreau
Explore the paintings of Hudson River School artists with actor Richard Smith as he portrays Henry David Thoreau and shares his thoughts on art, nature and the changing American landscape. Space is limited, reservations by July 28.

Demonstration: Pressed-Seaweed Art
Artist Lisabeth Billingsley shows how to create abstract art from pressed seaweeds, a modern interpretation of a 19th-century tradition.

New Hampshire–based serigraphy artist Bill Mitchell discusses inspirations for his landscapes and how artists featured in Painting the American Vision, such as Thomas Cole, have influenced his work.

Talk and Walk: Historic Gardens — In Your Own Backyard
11 am presentation, PEM | 1:30 pm tour of Ropes Mansion Garden, 318 Essex St., Salem, Mass.
Garden historian John Forti explains how to source and choose plants, planting patterns, structures and furnishings that bring elements of the past to life. Forti is curator of historic gardens and landscapes at Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth, N.H. Made possible by the Ropes Botanical Garden Lecture Fund.

Beer Tasting: A Pint of the Past — Ancient and Historic Beer | Reservations by August 4
Beer has been an integral part of culture since the dawn of civilization. In fact, it traveled along trade routes that brought some of the first objects to the East India Marine Society. Come explore the world of ancient and historic beers through PEM’s unique art collection with George Schwartz, assistant curator for exhibitions and research, and Nate Heck, head brewer at Salem Beer Works. Sample several modern beers based on archaeological evidence or historic recipes, including a British IPA brewed specially for the program by Salem Beer Works. Each beer will be paired with appropriately themed food.

Family Field Walk: Water Wonders
Forest River Conservation Area, Salem, Mass. | Members $8, nonmembers $10, children $6
Join Jane Winchell, curator of Ripple Effect, The Art of H2O, on a water and marsh exploration along the Forest River. Directions sent upon registration.


Sunday, August 21 | 2 – 3 pm | Children ages 5 – 8 with adult | Meet at information desk
Story Trails: Lighthouse Heroes | Reservations by August 19
Listen to the story of two young girls left alone to tend the lighthouse during the War of 1812, in Stephen Krensky’s Sisters of Scituate Light. Design your own lighthouse-lens sun catcher.


Tuesday, August 23 | 10:30 am – noon | Families with children ages 3 and up
Family Movie: Mulan | Bartlett and Copeland galleries | Reservations by August 19
Follow Mulan, a high-spirited Chinese girl who disguises herself as a man and joins the Chinese army. Mushu is the tiny dragon her family hires to discourage her. Make your own dragon to take home. Rated G, 88 minutes.

Explore Ripple Effect, The Art of H2O in the Art & Nature Center and experiment with water in interactive sculpture, decorated papers and Chinese calligraphy among other unexpected uses. Features Andrew Sempere’s Bowl of Oceans sculpture and Susan Fishman and Elena Kalman’s The Wave, an interactive installation in the Asian Garden. Enter through Asian Garden on Essex Street.
