1955 Was the Year, The Hawthorne Hotel was The Place

I recently received these four images, found on two postcards dated 1955, from our good friend, Nelson Dionne.  Thanks, Nelson!

The top photos appear to be (L) the room we now call the Library (which was called the Flag Room then), and (R) our Grand Ballroom.  Can you imagine? They covered over the the beautiful Palladium windows in order to make the hotel look more "modern" when they called it the Hawthorne Motor Hotel!!

The two photos above appear to be (L) the Tavern (was the Essex Room), and (R) Nathaniel's and Sophia's (was the Main Brace).  If you wish to see more detail in these photos, click on the image to enlarge it on your screen.

Now for some editorial commentary -- Don't you love the fact that the women sitting in the cocktail lounge were relegated to the tables, and the men all got to sit at the bar?  What about all the hats?  I know that in 1955 no self-respecting woman went out in public without a hat!  How times have changed!!

It's always so much fun looking at the historic photos of the Hawthorne Hotel.  I hope you enjoy seeing them as well.

Juli
