Zumba for the PMC Event at the Hawthorne Hotel

What is Zumba, one might ask? Here is the definition from Wikipedia:

Zumba is a Latin-inspired dance fitness program created by dancer and choreographer Alberto "Beto" Perez in Colombia during the 1990s.

Zumba involves dance and aerobic elements. Unlike a typical dance class where counts are used, Zumba involves following the music with repetitive movements. Zumba's choreography incorporates hip-hop, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo, martial arts, and some Bollywood and belly dance moves. Squats and lunges are also included.

What is the PMC? That is the Pan-Mass Challenge, a fund-raiser for the Jimmy Fund of Dana Farber Cancer Center of Massachusetts General Hospital. It is a really long bicycle ride that takes a lot of stamina.

So what does all of that have to do with the Hawthorne Hotel? Well, we are very civic-minded here at the Hawthorne, and we often donate our Grand Ballroom or other spaces to various good works in the community. This Zumba event was set up to help John Keenan raise money for the PMC, as he is one of those crazy bicycle riders who participate in this event every year.

The class in our Grand Ballroom on Sunday July 24.

You can easily see John Keenan working out with the rest of the the folks who came out to support him and the PMC.

John Keenan with Karen Cotton, our Director of Catering, who booked this event and helped Laurie Lassiter of Tinti, Quinn law firm get it all together.

I hope you enjoy seeing another aspect of what we do here at the Hawthorne Hotel.  Sometimes it is about giving back, and this was one of those times.
