A friend of mine who lives in another state routinely tells me how lucky I am to live in Salem because there is always so much going on here.  The Peabody Essex Museum is certainly a BIG contributor to that state of affairs for us lucky residents of Salem.

Saturday Art Series: Art 360º

Art 360° is a new series of classes with three sessions, various presenters and many unique takes on the same works of art. Join us for one session, or attend all three for the full effect.

In this first class, Sam Scott, coordinating curator of Painting the American Vision, Trevor Smith, curator of contemporary art, and John Forti, curator of historic landscape at Strawbery Banke Museum, lead a lively discussion on connections and contrasts in the depiction of the riverscape by 19th-century landscape artists, and by contemporary filmmaker Peter Hutton in his Two Rivers installation. Forti also discusses the growing habits, symbolism and practical use of flora depicted in the paintings.

Presentation: All for the Love of Thee, The Ballad, Francis Child and How Massachusetts Helped Invent the Modern Folk World

In partnership with the Salem Literature Festival, PEM offers a presentation on the traditional ballad. Featuring folk singer/author Scott Alarik and PEM Contemporary Art Curator Trevor Smith in a lively concert and conversation aimed at getting to know Francis James Child, a brilliant 19th-century Harvard professor who devoted his life to an epic collection of 305 ballads, still known as the Child Ballads. Joining them is folk musician Jake Armerding and PEM’s own Jennifer Evans, an accomplished ballad singer. Offered in conjunction with Susan Philipsz’s FreePort project, If I With You Would Go a haunting sound installation at PEM inspired by the Child Ballad The Daemon Lover. A book-signing reception follows.
