Another Historic Post Card For Our Collection

(To enlarge this image just click on it.)

The Hawthorne Hotel has a good friend and neighbor, Michael Coleman, who loves to collect historic information about Salem, and he is always on the hunt for things "Hawthorne Hotel" as well.  He recently sent me these images of the hotel which are so fun to see.

As you can see there was a building to the rear of the hotel.  This was the Now and Then Club, a local social club that was very popular for a number of years.  At some point the club was torn down to make way for a parking lot for the hotel.

In reading the postcard back, it appears that the person who wrote it used it as a kind of journal, never meaning to send it to anyone.  The interesting statement about "no charge for our rooms" causes much speculation about why.  Of course we would love to know the answer, but will likely never learn it.

I hope you enjoy seeing this little slice of our history.
