Cinema Salem Such a Comfortable Place

Tidbit 2: The Salem Film Fest launches just over four weeks from today with a lineup of the world's best documentaries, and in-person appearances by about 2/3 of the filmmakers. Mark your calendars: March 4-11.

Tidbit the Last: On the eve of the Salem Film Fest, Thursday, March 3, we're presenting two special events. One is a fun screening of Bill Cunningham New York at the Peabody Essex Museum, and the other is the fabulous awards ceremony for the Massachusetts Five-Minute Student Film Contest here at CinemaSalem, featuring the most gifted of tomorrow's filmmakers.

Now Playing: Tiny Furniture (NR); The King's Speech (R); Black Swan (R); and The Fighter (R)!

We're holding over three Oscar-favorite flicks, and bringing in one of the most interesting and offbeat films of the year.

Tiny Furniture is, according to the Detroit News, "Artful, smart, funny, sad and in its own small way dazzling." The Chicago Tribune says, "It's a find -- funny and rueful and verbally dexterous, leavening a quippy screenplay with just enough honesty to make it stick." Rolling Stone reviews the film and peeks into the crystal ball: "Tiny Furniture, winner of the SXSW festival's best narrative feature prize, gets under your skin. It's the work of a filmmaker with a stunning future."

Tiny Furniture will play in the Screening Room starting Friday at (5:15), 7:20 and 9:20; Saturday at 12:30, 3:00, 5:15, 7:20 and 9:20; Sunday at 12:30, 3:00, 5:15, and 7:20; and Monday-Thursday at (5:15) and 7:20.

The Screening Room just celebrated its second birthday, and there are patrons who come to see whatever Kereth books in there, whether it's a foreign treasure, an art film, an indie cult-film-in-the-making, or an evocative and moving documentary. With rare exceptions, the films we screen in this intimate living room of a theater are impossible to see anywhere else, and lots of people are in on the secret.

Designed two years ago to maximize the visual impact of high definition, we're happy that the studios/distributors/filmmakers are finally starting to deliver a preponderance of the flicks on Blu-ray (instead of DVD), allowing us to showcase the true strengths of this room. If you haven't been in the Screening Room, maybe this is the week you check it out?

We're happily bringing back The King's Speech, with jaw-dropping performances from Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush, which will screen on Friday at (4:45), 7:15 and 9:50; Saturday at (11:45 AM), (2:15), (4:45), 7:15 and 9:50; Sunday at (11:45 AM), (2:15), (4:45) and 7:15; and Monday-Thursday at (4:45) and 7:15.

Natalie Portman returns to show off her Best Female Actor chops in Black Swan , which will screen on Friday at (5:10), 7:30 and 10:00; Saturday at (12:15), (2:45), (5:10), 7:30 and 10:00; Sunday at (12:15), (2:45), (5:10) and 7:30; and Monday-Thursday at (5:10) and 7:30.

Also back for another strong and feisty week is The Fighter, which will screen on Friday at (4:20), 7:00 and 9:40; Saturday at (11:30 AM), (1:50), (4:20), 7:00 and 9:40; Sunday at (11:30 AM), (1:50), (4:20) and 7:00; and Monday-Thursday at (4:20) and 7:00.
