Regina Camarda of Salem was married at the Hawthorne Hotel on November 28, 1943. She was recently in the Tavern having lunch, and we snapped this photo of her.
She was thrilled with the special attention, as well as with her lunch.
We love being part of the fabric of people's lives, whether visitors from out of town here for vacation or a conference or wedding, or just a place for locals to dine, and reminisce.
I hope you will stop by too.

Absolutely Darling Dogs
What does the well-dressed visiting Chihuahua from California wear when he is staying at the Hawthorne Hotel in January? Well, these two were seen sightseeing around Salem, MA in their winter jackets with hoods, no less!
These two handsome long-haired Chihuahuas are Bruno and Duke, and they are from North Hollywood, California, here visiting with their owner, John Enos. Bruno is a frequent guest, having just completed his third stay with us.
What more can I say, but aren't they just darling?!! And thanks so much to Elizabeth Manzi for snapping these photos so I could share them with you, fair blog reader.
I hope you love the fact that we are a pet-friendly hotel and I hope to see you (and your pet) here soon.
Juli
P.S. Mr. Enos reports that the dogs are still enjoying their dog toys that we gave them during their stay, now that they are back at home.

King or Queen for a Day!
I recently had lunch at one of my favorite San Francisco French cafés, La Boulange, and was eye-balling these yummy galettes. I couldn't resist sending my friend Janet one of these tasty treats!
During the festival of Epiphany, people in Northern France and Belgium eat the galette des Rois, (flaky puff pastry with almond cream or frangipane.) In the South of France it is called gâteau des Rois or Royaume, and is made of brioche.
This is a kind of "kings' cake" with a trinket (feve) -- a porcelain figurine or a bean hidden inside. The person who gets the piece of cake with the trinket becomes "King" or "Queen" for a day. There is a whole collectors market for feves in France.
I've never tasted a galette de rois, but curious to know if Janet ended up getting the slice with the feve and got crowned Queen for a day?

When Is The Best Time To Purchase Airline Tickets?
Travel industry experts say that the best time to buy airline tickets is during the mid-week. Airlines usually decide on ticket sales on Monday night, thus making Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday's as the best days for travelers to purchase airline seats. WSJ writer, Scott McCartney also states that airlines usually decide to increase their prices on Thursday nights; making buying airline tickets over the weekend the worst time for travelers to purchase tickets. While airlines are slowly adapting fire sales online to their loyal followers, social media sites such as facebook and twitter still account for a very minor share of total sales.

Happy Weekend, I'm Dancing!
I'm dancin' in the street cause I got a great report card from the doctor yesterday. Last November I had a fluke incident with my carotid artery (long, boring story), and now I'm almost all healed! I'm off my medicine and back to my regular routine! YIPPEE!
Wishing you all a fabulous weekend of dancing in the street!!

Introducing Your Grand Rapids' Superfriendz 2011
2011 is destined to be another amazing year for Grand Rapids' street team of leaders who are committed to helping local non-profit organizations connect with our community through our network of friends, colleagues and professional
contacts. While the 2010 inaugural team of Superfriendz focused on connecting the Heart of West Michigan United Way to the next generation of donors, advocates and volunteers, the group's mission this year has been expanded to help at least 6 non-profit organizations gain support for their fundraising efforts, special events, campaigns and public relations through word-of-mouth, face-to-face interactions and social media avenues such as facebook and twitter.The group has broadened its reach by expanding membership to cover a wider array of demographic segments including media, social media, creative, small business, marketing, non-profit, cultural, corporate, entertainment, government and strategy. Superfriendz recruited top notch experts in each particular field to fill the missing gaps in the group's strategic make-up.
Two non-profit organizations have already partnered with the Superfriendz this year - Kids Food Basket/Juice Ball and Gilda's Club/Laughfest are on board. The group is currently reviewing other potential non-profit applications to complete the campaign calendar for 2011.
The Superfriendz are also waiting on a couple more individuals who have yet to make a decision on the group's invitation to join this exclusive club of community advocates. Founding Superfriendz members welcome our new street team members:
Tommy Fitzgerald - chef, founder of Juice Ball and overall great guy.
Raquel Salas - Attorney with Avanti Law Firm and prominent leader in the Hispanic community.
Jennifer Ederer - Owner, Modern Day Floral. Lead singer, Hip Pocket.
Kelly Stecco - Director of Events and Marketing, Thousand Oaks Country Club.
Jessica Ann Tyson - President, Events by Jessica Ann. Organizer of The Legacy Ball.
Rosalynn Bliss - City of Grand Rapids City Commisioner. Director, St. John's Home
Abbey Sloan - Reporter for WXMI Fox 17
Mike Mraz - VP, Jade Pig Ventures. Organizer of the March of Dimes annual Chef's Auction and founder of Culture and Cocktails.
Chad Leroux - Executive Corporate Director of Marketing, Amway Hotel Corporation
Ashley Cole - Interior Designer, Ashley Cole Design
Lisa Rose Starner - Farm to Plate advocate. Wildcrafter & Backyard Herbalist, Burdock & Rose
The current Superfriendz would also like to thank past members Pete Brand, Laura Caprara and Josh Depenbrok for all their help and support last year. We will miss you. However, once a Superfriendz, always a Superfriendz.
The Superfriendz was awarded an Innovation Award by the Business Review West Michigan in 2010 for our innovative work in connecting the Heart of West Michigan United Way to the community.
If you have any suggestions or questions about advocacy, please send email to georgeaquino@mac.com or connect with any of the current members.
Here's to an amazing and memorable 2011!
Why I Love Social Media
Sometimes I get an out of the ordinary response to what I see as a fairly ordinary post. Today was one of those days.
When I opened my email, there was a lovely, albeit brief, email from a guest who had a wedding reception in the hotel in 1960!! Here is the email, which was written to me in response to yesterday's post about our award from WeddingWire:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I CONCUR: MY WEDDING RECEPTION WAS HELD ON 9.5/60 in the ballroom of
the hotel. LATE IN COMING; NEVERTHELESS, EVERYTHING WENT VERY WELL--
FOOD, MUSIC, CURTEOUS STAFF.
ALL GUESTS REMARKED IN THE POSITIVE. THANK YOU
_~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I wanted to be sure I understood it correctly, so I wrote back, as follows:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Subject: Re: Hawthorne Hotel RESPONSE
Wow! Let me see if I am understanding this email correctly? You were
married here on September 5, 1960, 50-1/2 years ago? And you still
remember what a great job we did in providing a wonderful reception
spot for you?
I would love to put your testimonial on our website. It certainly
shows the longevity of our excellent service. Would you be willing to
assist us with that?
Kind regards,
Juli
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And I quickly received the following email in return:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes, of couse; we were married at the church down the street on the
boulevard, and enjoyed a brief wedding breakfast and reception in the
ballroom. I still have and cherish the silver cake server given to us
as a gift. Thank you
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
and this next one as well:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In addition, I spent eight years at what use to be St. Mary's School on
the boulevard. On very cold, windy days and a long walk home ahead of
us., we use to cut through the hotel lobby to avoid the bitterly cold
wind--the staff was pleasant and never chastised us. During those
days, the hotel had revolving doors. Thank you, again.
Sincerely,
Jean

Hello, Julie: How may I help to promote the Hawthorne? Although we
had a wonderful start, unfortunately, the marriage endured only 10
years, however, the memories will last a lifetime

I just love how this all unfolded, and fully intend to connect with this lovely guest who so freely shared such great memories. This kind of oral history is so important to collect, as any historian might tell you. It is rare when a business manager (such as a hotel general manager) has the opportunity to make such a contact, and I am so grateful to social media for making these kinds of contacts possible. I am not sure that they would have been so easily established any other way.
I hope you enjoy reading this little story that was part of our "daily diary" of life at the Hawthorne Hotel today, and I would encourage you to share your stories with us as well -- if you have a story that connects you to the historic Hawthorne Hotel, please do let us know.
Thank you, and I hope to see you here!

Ladies, Can You Wear Heels?
This topic is very random, but seeing stilettos in every shop or magazine spread is making me wonder, who wears them? Obviously someone is. Even Oprah does.
The other day I posted a photo of some beautiful pink stilettos. I started thinking about how "unglamorous" I've become. Okay, I'm 50 years old, but can't wear more than a 2-3 inch heel. I'm so clumsy, that I fall without shoes on. Ask a few of my friends and they'll tell you some funny stories about my falls.
My cousin came up to visit after Christmas and we hit some big shoe sales. She ended up buying 5 pairs of stilettos! That's right. She's 50 as well. How can she wear them?
Louboutins? Even if they were affordable, couldn't do it. And oh how I love the red soles...
I'm wondering, do you wear heels? I know it's a silly question, but still a little puzzled about my 5'4" cousin (who's 50) wearing 6 inch heels!

Our Day for Announcements
Another Accolade for the Hawthorne Hotel Team
Today we received notification that WeddingWire, a leading wedding technology company, announced that the Hawthorne Hotel has been selected to receive the prestigious annual WeddingWire Bride’s Choice Awards™ 2011 for Hotels.
Recognition for the Bride’s Choice Awards™ 2011 is determined by recent reviews and surveys from over 750,000 WeddingWire newlyweds.
According to WeddingWire, the Hawthorne Hotel ranked among the top five percent of wedding professionals in the WeddingWire community, representing quality and service excellence within the wedding industry.
We would like to thank our past clients for nominating us to receive the Bride’s Choice Awards™ 2011.
If you desire more information on the Bride’s Choice Awards™ 2011, you might wish to visit http://www.weddingwire.com/.
Salem Chamber of Commerce
Today the Salem Chamber of Commerce confirmed the election of me, Juli Lederhaus, General Manager of the Hawthorne Hotel, as the new President of the Salem Chamber of Commerce for 2011.
This is not a first for me; I was President of the Salem Chamber in 2006. The President is usually elected as part of a succession plan, but the plan for this year came up with a bit of a hole when someone in line for the position suddenly left the area. I agreed to step in when approached by the Executive Director, Rinus Ooshoek.
This year the focus of the Salem Chamber will be on "Local, Mobile and Social," so stay tuned! If you are a business person in Salem, and not already a member of the Salem Chamber, now would be a perfect time to join.
As always, I hope to see you here in Salem, and at the historic Hawthorne Hotel.

New Headboards Are Joining Our New Beds
Because we recently changed a number of our beds from queens to kings, we had to get new headboards to match the bigger beds. Since our furniture is vintage, hardwood furniture, that is not available anymore, we decided to have upholstered headboards made for these rooms.
Today we installed one of them in one of our rooms, and I snapped this photo with my iPhone so you could see what was going on.
I hope you enjoy keeping us with us!

January...The Garnet
Before the month of January is over, I thought I'd give a shout-out to the gorgeous red garnet. How many of you are lucky enough to have this as your birthstone? I'm an amethyst...pretty, but not quite as rich as a garnet.
Did you know that? The word garnet is derived from the Greek word "granatum" which means "pomegranate seed" reflecting the shape and color of the crystals. Like diamonds, gemstones are graded by color, cut, clarity and carat weight.
And...garnets are found in many varieties, each being described by a special name.
And...garnets are found in many varieties, each being described by a special name.
- The Bohemian garnet is a deep red, while the Cinnamon garnet stone usually has its color varied by a tinge of orange.
- Almandine garnets have a violet hue and take their name from Alabanda, a town in Asia Minor, where, according to the Roman author Pliny, this stone (which he describes as the Alabandicus) was in his time cut and polished.
So... Happy Birthday Garnet! If you must treat yourself to a garnet, the above pieces can be found at Paris Hotel Boutique!

Find the Photo Contest!
Today I posted some of my favorite pink images, but was not able to find photo credit for this beautiful one above.
So, I thought we'd have a little fun. The first person to leave a comment with the original photo credit of this image gets a pink prize. Not sure what it is yet...it could be vintage or new, but definitely PINK!

RIP Jack LaLanne
The godfather of fitness & nutrition. Do you remember the Jack LaLanne show? What an impact this man had on our lives, and he was promoting a healthy lifestyle long before it became an international obsession.
Imagine... he was still working out for two hours every morning until he passed away at age 96.
I better start that treadmill again...

Italy Comes to the Hawthorne Hotel
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwiR2XqureU
At the very end of our most recent snowstorm, we received a group of twenty tour operators from Italy, to have lunch and tour our historic hotel.
It was a happy coincidence that we were flying the Italian flag on the front of our hotel, as part of our formal flag program.
We thought we would ask these wonderful people to give you their opinion about the Hawthorne Hotel while standing under their country's flag, and they were happy to oblige us.
I hope you enjoy seeing yet another part of our daily life here at the hotel -- this is the part where we work towards getting more guests to come from all over the world to visit our wonderful city of Salem, Massachusetts, and to have their groups and visitors stay with us.
We hope to see you here!
Ciao!!!

We Have a Concierge!!
Well, not at Paris Hotel Boutique exactly, but in our family.
My husband recently started a job as a concierge for the Westin & Sir Francis Drake Hotels in San Francisco. Isn't it ironic? My love for hotels and he working for them!
He's doing a job that he is absolutely passionate about...assisting and serving others in a city that he knows like none other. And, he's certainly keeping me on my toes as to what the latest happenings are in the City.
So, if you're coming to San Francisco and looking for some assistance, Paris Hotel Boutique will refer you to one of our finest concierges!
At your service!
ACE NYC
If Starbucks defined the "Third Place" about a decade ago, the Ace hotel group has added a fourth category - The Gen Love Place. Upon entering the lobby of the Ace in midtown NYC, you couldn't help but be enamored by the energy that vibrates throughout its packed lobby. Mac users are shoulder to shoulder with PC's, earthy chick with metro sexual
dude, guy on guys, sporty with spice. A huge American flag is the backdrop behind the bar, screaming "This is the new America and if you don't like it, then get lost." This is the college library on steroids. People are trying to look busy with their spreadsheets, but you know, everyone just wants to hook up eventually. If you dig this kind of socio-collaborative space, then chill and stay awhile.The rooms range from bunk beds to S,M,L kings, to lofts. All with private baths and "vintage" beddings and furniture. To a certain degree, it's like shacking up at a college roommate's pad in the city less the empty pizza boxes and beer cans. Private bathrooms, free wireless and mini bars are standard. Starting at around $200 per night (in midtown!), that's a bargain.
But the action is truly in the lobby area. Portland's Stumptown Coffee Roasters is connected to the lobby for your late afternoon cortado cravings. Michelin starred chefs of the Spotted Pig, April Bloomfield and Ken Friedmam, took residence here with their tribute to "nose to tail" cuisine at the Breslin Bar and Dining Room. And for some retail therapy, the No. 8A & Opening Ceremony boutique behind the front desk is a classic bohemian's travel and design paradise.
The Ace is a perfect hotel if you're traveling solo on business or if you're the TED-type, modern social anthropologist looking for live sample specimens for the sheer fun of it.
