Hotel Vertigo

Many of you are familiar with Alfred Hitchcock's classic film, Vertigo, that was filmed in San Francisco. I was just reading Karen at Alkemie's post about the Personality Hotels, a chain of boutique hotels in San Francisco. This Hotel Vertigo caught my eye with its wonderful color palette and design.

This room above is the "Hitchcock Suite." DON'T BE SCARED!

Formerly the York Hotel, the hotel was refurbished in 2008 and named the Hotel Vertigo. It features luxury amenities that make a playful nod toward the Hitchcock film. White and tangerine-colored thread-count sheets, plush beds with white leather headboards. Love the colors. So sleek!

I'm going crazy over these custom tangerine wingback chairs that display the Vertigo name. These could look great in my house.

The white and orange color palette looks great. Loving these horse head lamps!

If anyone has stayed here, I'd love to hear your opinion on it. Looks like a great boutique hotel.

Paint the Town!

I just stumbled upon this fun site, Town Toiles. Their colorful toiles celebrate famous cities across America. They carry everything from fabric and wallpaper to gift items. They have a great vintage look to them, don't they?

Charleston in pretty Oyster Blue

I'm generally not a big fan of toiles, but these are very whimsical and vintage-inspired. I would love to wallpaper a small room or bathroom with one of these, such as the Charleston (above) in Oyster Blue.

San Francisco landmarks in pale blue & chocolate

Tampa in raspberry and lime green - great combo!

New York City in cream and black

Chicago in pale blue and chocolate brown

Boston in cream and wedgewood

There are other cities and color variations. You can check out Town Toile's website here.

My Favorite Old World Wine in the World: Chateau Musar

My French brother-in-law, Raph Blot, gets credit for introducing me to the fascinating Lebanese wine, Chateau Musar. My family and I were celebrating Christmas at Raph and my sister's house in Hong Kong, when out of nowhere, this proud Frenchman and former Bordeaux snob, whips out a bottle of Lebanese wine! To my surprise, Chateau Musar over-delivered beyond my expectation. A few years later, Raph and I, along with our spouses, experienced a vertical tasting of three vintages of Musar at Aureole in Las Vegas. Along with new wine friends, Frank and Betzie Duncan, the three of us tried the 2000 Musar at Mixology at the JW this evening.

So after three tastings, here's my take on Chateau Musar. The bottle I tasted in Hong Kong (sorry wine snobs, I forgot the vintage) reminded me of a true Bordeaux style wine with a dominant cabernet nose, while the vertical tastings of the '89,'90, and '91 tasting in Vegas reminded me of a fine Burgundy. The 2000 we tasted this evening was mellow with subtle hints of fresh picked cherries and earth from the Southern Rhone. Just like a fine marriage, no matter what age (or which grape shows up), I just can't resist the mysterious character of Chateau Musar. I just love it regardless.

Read more about the amazing history of Chateau Musar by visiting its website. Better yet, stop by six.one.six at the and JW try a bottle for yourself.

10 Things To Do In Bali-hotel

10 Things To Do In Bali-hotel

by Sofia Deluca

Balis varied landscape of hills and mountains, rugged coastlines and sandy beaches, lush rice terraces and barren volcanic hillsides provide a picturesque backdrop to the colorful and deeply spiritual culture of this "Island of The Gods." Below are a few questions that are commonly asked plus tips on the dos and donts of Bali Travel.
1/ Do you need a visa for travel to bali?
In general you don't need to get a visa before you to Bali from most countries. A visa costs approximately US$10 for 7 days/US$25 for 30 days. If you have a Hong Kong SAR or Macau SAR passport, then you will get a free visa.
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry into Indonesia, and you must have proof of onward passage (either return or through tickets). If you cannot fulfill both of these requirements, you may not be allowed to enter the country.
The Visa on Arrival is non-extendable and cannot be converted into a different visa. Once you disembark, you will come to an area where you buy your visa. (Do not miss this section). AFTER you have paid for and received your visa you THEN proceed to Immigration where your visa will be processed.
2/ Is it safe to travel to Bali?
On October 12, 2002, the most commercialized, southern area of Bali came under attack by terrorists. The Kuta Beach tourist area is often referred to as "Little Australia" by the local people because it is known to primarily cater to Australian tourists and surfers. This shocking tragedy sent the message around the world that no tourist destination is completely safe in our dangerous times. What a disappointment to all who have come to deeply appreciate the hospitable Balinese people and their culture. But the intent of the perpetrators was to strike at Western revelers and their commercialism. Since Bali as a whole is primarily unscathed by such ugly decay, the Balinese culture remains untouched. However, the impact on the tourist economy has not been minimal.
In recent years, tourism has contributed significantly to the financial well-being of the island and even to Indonesia as a whole. Swift efforts by the government to ensure a speedy recover are underway. Strict security measures have been implemented. Some countries have already lifted travel warnings implemented, and tourism to Bali is again on the rise.
3/ Do I need a License to drive or Ride in Bali? Yes. If you live in Australia, then the best way to do this is to see your NRMA branch and apply for an International Drivers License which will cost you $25 for one year. Other countries: see your roads and traffic authority to apply for an international licence. This is easy to do, will save you the headaches of police fines and problems; and will be a lot easier than applying for a temporary license once you get to Bali as this takes a full day in Denpasar filling in applications and doing the test.
More Bali Tips:
Change money at a reputable looking location, use your own (or the hotel's) calculator before changing! Drink a lot of bottled water and eat lots of fresh fruit - do your body a favor.
Be careful with your belongings at all times. Crime is on the increase and can ruin your holiday. Cases of handbag snatching have been reported, so leave important documents in your hotel safe and wear your bag across your shoulders!
Try not to step on offerings in the street (walk around them).
Respect the slow pace of processions when stuck behind one, i.e. don't honk!
Haggle when buying (except on price-tagged goods.)
Buy 'Imodium AD' to relieve bouts of Bali belly.
Have a great holiday in Bali!
Dont: Forget to take your passport (or a photocopy of your ID).
Do drugs! It can carry the death penalty, and there are enough foreigners residing in Bali courtesy of the Govt. Prison service!
Touch people's heads - it is very offensive to Hindus.
Enter a temple during menstruation. Sorry Ladies!
Forget to put salt on your food & drink water - you will probably sweat a lot.
Worry too much about the ice - its government-quality controlled in established bars and restaurants.
Forget to look and listen while you cross the road. Cars may stop, motorbikes may not! Forget to reconfirm your flight 72 hours prior to flying.
By following these tips, you will get the most out of your holiday with the least amount of hassles. Have a great trip and enjoy!

A Guide for tourists who Enjoys Sightseeing in Murcia Spain-hotel

A Guide for tourists who Enjoys Sightseeing in Murcia Spain-hotel
by Peter Mason

Sightseeing in Murcia, Spain is one of the most enriching experiences for any tourist or traveler who would be fortunate enough to pass by this province. With a rich history dating back to around 825 A.D. when it was first founded, Murcia has seen much of religious transition from Islam to Christianity. Anyone who has a very strong interest in the religious history of Spain may find it here, as it contains many churches and cathedrals as old as it was first discovered.
One of the most noted construct is the Cathedral of the Diocese of Cartagena, which was built between 1394 and 1465. Most of the succeeding religious buildings were instead done throughout the 15th and 18th century. Thus one may see why there are some designs inspired by Baroque, Renaissance and others.
Getting there
Reaching the province of Murcia is easy, as it has two main access points via airplane. The primary entry point is its own Murcia-San Javier Airport, and the alternative is airport in the neighboring province of Alicante.
Once in the city, moving around will be quite convenient with the many transportation methods such as Buses, Trams, Trains and Taxicabs.
Even if Murcia has already been urbanized, it still is a major producer of agricultural food. It supplies neighboring provinces and technically the whole of Spain with fresh produce such as tomatoes, lettuce, lemons and oranges.
Latest Tourism Trend
With a blossoming tourism rate, Murcia has directed its economic drive to the propagation of its "residential tourism". Wherein real estate is made quite affordable and accessible for travelers and tourists. Europeans and other foreigners who wish to have a second home in this peaceful urbanized province may do so, as it is an ideal place of relaxation and meditation.
Festivities to look out for in Murcia
Anyone who wishes to take part of the festivities in Murcia may opt to best fly in during the Holy Week celebration where in such processions are numerous. During this week, residents take out life-sized holy figurines and parade these around the city which attracts more people to attend.
Another festivity worth seeing is the Bando de la huerta, usually celebrated after Holy Week celebrations. In this, participants dress up in the usual huertano clothing and parade around the city.
Murcia also boasts one of the best made wines from the rich, fertile soil that the city is located.
Since Spain has been a melting pot of different races who have influenced the citizenry and the different established religions, the Three Cultures International Festival is celebrated in May. Its main objective is to unite the Muslims, Jews, and Christians in the celebration of national identity.
Be sure to properly set up hotel reservations and an itinerary of the schedule of events to be done when visiting Murcia to avoid waiting and delays.

Sweet San Francisco

photo: Miette Confiserie, Hayes Valley (look at the gumdrop tree!)

Miette, one of my favorite "sweet haunts" in San Francisco, recently opened up their third location in San Francisco's Marina district.

Photo: Miette Patisserie, Ferry Building

Each location has fabulous vintage-inspired decor. Dreamy places of wonderment. Pastel-colored pedestal cake plates, candy-colored furnishings, vintage glass jars filled with colorful malt balls... a Willy Wonka for us older folks!

The Patisserie in San Francisco's Ferry Building has an amazing selection of cakes and cupcakes, tarts, macaroons, cookies and more. All made with the finest and freshest ingredients. Believe me, even the boxes are worth the trip!

The Confisserie has the most beautiful selection of candy you can imagine. Upon entering the shop, there is a large tree made of gumdrops. It's Candy Land! There are apothecary jars from the floor to ceiling, with imported Dutch licorice, beautiful pastel salt water taffy, and the finest chocolates from around the world. And, on the weekends they have rose-geranium cotton candy that is to die for!

One of the greatest things about Miette is the presentation. Whenever I want to buy a special "candy" gift for someone, the wonderful staff at Miette takes so much time in wrapping each little bag with care. One tiny $3 bag of candy is wrapped with a bow and sticker and looks amazing. Once I purchased a box of assorted candies and it was the most beautiful presentation--who could eat it?

If you're coming to San Francisco, be sure and visit Miette. You'll love it! You can visit their website here for locations and hours.

Etiquette: Your Comments!

I thought it would be fun to share some of your comments from the Etiquette Giveaway. The things that were most important to you were handwritten notes & letters, cell phone manners and, surprisingly, men being gentleman. Here are some of your comments:

Handwritten Notes & Letters, including RSVP's:

I'd like to see more people honoring the concept of RSVP when it comes to invitations to events and parties. It's amazing to me how people won't let people know whether or not they're coming to an event and the either don't show up or they come with extra people in tow.
-Sabrina

THANK YOU notes!!! Sometimes people don't write thank you notes immediately after a gift is received and that bugs me! It takes 2 mins people, and I for one look forward to hearing what a person thinks about a gift I took the time to pick out. -Lauren

I would like to see letters being sent in the mail again. With the technology that is at our finger tips today, there has been a decrease in romance and communication. Cell phones, text messages, email...they are so impersonal. Writing letters is an art and is beautiful. -JZ

I must say one thing in particular that I am a stickler for is written thank yous. To receive a handwritten note of gratitude is a dying art. E-mails just don't cut it. And people that cannot even acknowledge receipt of a gift that a person took their time, effort, thought and money to get are just lame. -DolceDreams

I would love it if people would kindly send a short but sweet thank you note after they receive a gift. Sometimes I don't even know if they received it as they never acknowledge it. -Casie Rachele

True Gentlemen

I would love if a man stood up when a lady was leaving the table and coming back to the table. I always love how classy that looks in movies, it gives such respect! -Fabbrunette

What happened to men opening the doors for women? I have gone into stores and had the door hit me in the face because the man in front of me didn't bother to hold the door open. men don't seem to respect their ladies like they used too! There are a few good men who still do this for women and when I see it I cry! -Carla

I particularly wish men wore hats and suits everyday. I love men in hats! And I'm not talking about baseball hats! When I go to the office, I want to see the polished look of a man in a suit and hat, not a man in shorts and a t-shirt. But if I could weave this into an issue of etiquette, I wish men would wear hats and tip them like they used to! -DesertChildAZ

The men now maybe debonair and suave, but it isn't the way we are thinking. Go back to the era of where men were true gentlemen. Car door opened for you, chairs pulled away for you to sit down, and men would stand up as you left and came back to the table. -Mikela

Cell Phone Usage

I wish folks would curb their cell phone usage in public -- waiting rooms, grocery checkout, restaurants, etc.) How often I see someone checking out at the store, talking on the phone the ENTIRE TIME -- so rude to the cashier, as if she/he does not even exist. -The Beautiful Life

Nothing is ruder than a fellow diner talking on the phone when you are eating. -NewlywedHostess

I would like to see people put down their blackberries while attending meetings or just having a conversation with another person. -Bonjour Madame

Dressing

Dressing for the occasion~~it shows respect for others and ones self. -The Red Velvet Shoe

I love the idea of getting dressed to go to the bank or on a flight. -Paris Atelier

General Acts of Kindness

Please, thank-yous, and a general air of politeness - that would be a great place to start! -Eme

Respect always older people like our grandparents or simply people who you know have lived a lot more than you. -Ana

Opening the doors for others , or holding the door open for those behind you so that it does not shut on their person would be so nice. I think the very practice just honors a concept that "I see you are there, and I value you as a human being," which is so very lost today in almost every etiquette transgression there is going. -Karos

I miss neighborhoods that had a real sense of community ... where neighbors at least said "hello" on the street. Remember when we could go and borrow a cup of sugar from each other?
-Lisa Golightly

I'd love it if we would take a moment and acknowledge everyone we come into contact with. How awesome our days could be if we looked people in the eyes, took a breath, and spread some kindness around. -Frenchee le Trip

Thanks again everyone!!
